Members of the Brandon Police Service participated in a security training exercise with CFB Shilo personnel on Wednesday.

This unique training opportunity was seized upon by both institutions as being of tremendous benefit to everyone, according to a release issued from CFB Shilo’s public affairs officer.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had the opportunity to have Brandon Police Service actually participate in one of our training scenarios,” said Lt.-Col. John Cochrane, base commander.

The exercise included a simulation of an active shooter taking hostages and involved Brandon Police Service’s tactical team. This is the first time that BPS has taken part in a joint exercise with CFB Shilo members.

All this week, Shilo Military Police and the base’s Auxiliary Security Force are conducting a security training exercise. Part of the training included a simulation of an active shooter taking hostages. Part of the response to the situation involved Brandon Police Service’s tactical team.

“This was a great opportunity for us. Coming out here, it is something totally different from where we usually train in Brandon, so it takes everybody out of their comfort zone. We really need to think about covering all the points we need to cover,” BPS Staff Sgt. Marc Alain said. “Whenever you have this type of hostage situation you want to make sure you have the right people in place to deal with it.”

“We rely on civilian police forces for this type of security scenario. This is their area of expertise and jurisdiction,” said Lt. (Navy) Greg Ansley, commanding officer of the military police. “There is always value in conducting joint training and sharing resources and knowledge.”

The training took place using a modular simulation area similar to an office environment with a maze of different rooms that each needed to be checked and cleared.
