Update: Police seize guns following chase

Thursday afternoon’s car chase, in which police made a pair of arrests, led them to a city home where they seized guns and arrested another man, bringing the total of people arrested for the day’s events to three.

Police delivered an update on the case around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday in which they detailed the series of events that led to the arrests.

That chain of events actually began on Wednesday when police were told to be on the lookout for a Black Audi vehicle with a Saskatchewan licence plate. A caller had seen a man punch a woman while in the vehicle which was travelling south on First Street.

Police couldn’t find the vehicle at the time, but were informed several hours later that a man was driving the black Audi SUV with Saskatchewan licence plates and may have a handgun.

Early Thursday morning, police found an unoccupied SUV matching the description in a parking the parking lot of the Trails West Inn. Police learned the driver’s identity and police records showed tht the man from Saskatoon has a lengthy and violent criminal record. He was also bound by a bail order to live in Saskatoon and abide by a curfew.

At 12:22 p.m., police watched as the man and a woman exited a hotel room and entered the SUV with the man driving. Police tried to stop the SUV, but during that stop it’s driver took off, dragging the police officer a short distance while he tried to stop the driver. The officer wasn’t injured.

That SUV led police on a high-speed pursuit that ended when the man lost control of the SUV and hit a concrete barrier in the CPR rail yard under the First Street Bridge.

The woman from the SUV tried to run but was caught. The man ran but was caught after a police search that involved the K-9 unit. The suspect was hiding in a shed at the rear of a home on the 00-block of Third Street.

It turns out the SUV had been stolen from Saskatoon.

A 31-year-old Saskatoon man faces six charges that include flight, possession of stolen property, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

A 26-year-old woman of no fixed address is charged with possession of stolen property.

Both of those suspects will appear in court on Friday.

But the investigation didn’t end there.

Police were informed that another man, also a 31-year-old man from Saskatoon, was at a residence on the 600 block of Franklin Street had a handgun and assault rifle.

At 4:52 p.m. he exited the home and was arrested. Inside the home, police found a .22-calibre long rifle, a 20-gauge shotgun, a hunting rifle and a BB gun. The realistic-looking BB gun was the handgun police were warned about.

A pickup truck parked at the home had been stolen from Prince Albert, Sask.

This third suspect will appear in court on Friday and faces six charges that include possession of stolen property, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibtion order.
