Hey there, time traveller!

Several playgrounds across Brandon will be spruced up this summer as part of the city’s greenspace master plan.
New play structures will be installed at Wascana Drive Playground (44 Neepawa Dr.); Park Community Common (355 15th St.) and Crocus Playground (328 Cornwallis Cres.)
“Adding to the greenspaces that already exist is a huge priority for us,” said BryceWilson, manager of parks operations. “Obviously we need to budget within certain parameters, but we want to provide these amenities to all neighbourhoods in the city, so it’s a big push for us.”
Each of the new structures come at a cost of $40,000, and work is expected to begin mid-July.
“We found a way to provide three structures for three different neighbourhoods, instead of just going to one neighbourhood and doing one larger project,” Wilson said.
These locations were chosen through recommendations in the greenspace master plan, as well as from city maintenance staff who check the parks on a regular basis. The contractors are required to complete the job by Sept. 1, however, Wilson anticipates they will be finished earlier.
In addition, a few amenities will be added to other parks, including a child/toddler swing at Patricia Heights Community Park (5 Young Ave.), a beach volleyball court at Wascana Drive Playground, as well as a new play feature at North End Community Centre.
The greenspace master plan was approved by council in 2015, with a goal of helping to shape the city and improve the quality of life for residents. One notable project also being tackled this summer is the transformation of a parking lot on the east side of the A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex into a usable greenspace. The $215,000 project, located at the corner of Princess Avenue and Sixth Street, will feature a recreation zone, community gardens and a performance area.
The master plan recommends athletic fields be located away from the river in new multi-purpose activity greenspaces, while flood-prone lands should be allowed to naturalize and offer a unique ecological feature of the city.
