Tucked in behind the Brandon General Museum and Archives, model railroaders were seen tinkering away at their elaborate train sets on Saturday.

As one of their twice-annual open houses, members of the Brandon Hills Model Railway Club invited the public into their space to learn a bit more about what they do and why they do it.

Initially situated at the old Strand Theatre building, they’ve shifted spaces a few times, settling at their current location at 19 Ninth St. approximately seven years ago.

Their space is filled by elaborate train sets, on which model trains make their way through villages, mountains and lakes.

A club member since the mid-1990s, Tony DeVliegere said that like most members, he’d always been around locomotives and fell in love with them over the years.

“I think that’s what happens to most people,” he said. “They grow up and they like trains.”

The time-consuming work and dedication that goes into the craft is immediately apparent when looking at the club’s expansive train sets, including Ho-scale (1/87th) and N-scale (1/160th) examples.

Member Trevor Bryant has added a unique technological flair to the effort by controlling the N-scale trains with a tablet computer.

He has been a club member since 2012 and a lifelong train fan, having grown up next to the Canadian Pacific mainline at Douglas.

A testament to the club’s wide-ranging membership, 14-year-old Eric Van Heyst said that he’d been interested in trains since he was in kindergarten and that his love of the hobby was intensified by a visit to Prairie Dog Central Railway, a vintage short line railway in Winnipeg.

Those interested in the club can visit their space any Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon or visit their website at brandonhillsmrc.wix.com/bhmrc.
