Two decades after the Canada Games were last held in Brandon, the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay returned today, and the Brandon community once again came out in full force.
Dignitaries and citizens alike turned out to the Brandon Community Sportsplex this morning for a community ceremony which included introductions of the 15 torch bearers, as well as remarks from Mayor Rick Chrest.
The relay began at 11 a.m. and the torch was carried by people who were nominated and selected by a local committee. Brandon Wheat Kings defencemen James Shearer was the second torch bearer.
The torch was lit as per tradition in Ottawa on June 6.
On June 21 Indigenous Elders infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, which honours the land and water that the games are to be held upon.
The torch relay made its way through several Manitoba communities including Gimli and Thompson before stopping in Brandon today.
Brandon is the torches final stop before kicking off the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.
