A boy’s joyride in a stolen car ended Friday afternoon when he smashed the car into a Brandon Transit bus, causing it to careen off the road and crash into a downtown business.
Complicating the matter was the fact the boy tried to flee the scene on foot but was commandeered by two bystanders. His passenger, a young girl, got away.
Witnesses who saw the event unfold, shortly before 4 p.m., say the youth, maybe 12 or 13 years old, was travelling westbound on Princess Avenue when he ran a red light at 10th Street and struck the bus.
The bus swerved into the brick building housing Samson Engineering, denting the historical building on the west side of 10th Street. The car spun 180 degrees, coming to a stop at a guardrail at the northeast corner of the intersection.
Shocked by what he witnessed only feet away, Fabian Houle ran toward the car to check on the occupants.
Escaping the vehicle was a boy and a young girl about the same age.
“I saw him get out of the passenger seat and I thought it would be an old man,” Houle said, “but it was a young boy.”
Ignoring pleas to stay put, the kids fled. They ran across Princess and bolted east through the skate park, as Houle and Dennis Pozo gave chase.
Houle yelled at a bystander up ahead that these youngsters were responsible for hitting a bus. The other man cornered and grabbed ahold of the boy to stop him from running. The girl was able to escape.
Houle then held the boy by the shoulders, “not in a forcing way where I was hurting him, but just to stop him from running,” he said, and walked him to the scene of the crash.
The boy attempted to escape. “He tried at first, he tried hitting me in the nether regions,” said Houle, who guarded himself.
The youngster was reserved, refusing to answer any of Houle’s questions.
The boy was handed over to authorities.
Afterwards, Pozo, a fellow Brandonite who ran after the boy, was fuelled by adrenalin.
“My heart is beating,” Pozo said as curious bystanders crowded around the bizarre sight of a bus stuck in a building.
“You have no idea how surprised I am that nobody got hurt.”
He was aware of a young woman, believed to be a passenger on the bus, that had a gash on the side of her head. She was OK, she insisted.
The Brandon Police Service was not available to comment on what occurred by deadline.
