The Brandon Sun has earned another feather in its cap after being ranked the most-read daily print publication within its readership area in the nation, according to the latest report by third-party data gathering company Vividata.

Approximately 80 per cent of Brandonites read The Brandon Sun’s print offerings per week and approximately 85 per cent of Brandon residents read either its print or digital offerings.

While it ranks first among print publications, the combination print and digital readership ranks it as fifth in the nation.

While publisher Jim Mihaly said that fifth isn’t anything to scoff at, he said this rank should improve as more readers experience the publication’s new website.

“I think that will, in time, bring us to the level we need to be,” he said, adding that with approximately 70 per cent of online readers absorbing local content via mobile devices, the new site should help the numbers, with the new website more mobile device friendly than its predecessor.

The Brandon Sun boasts approximately 20,000 daily readers, 27,000 Saturday readers and a total readership of 38,000 when factoring in weekly print and digital offerings.

“It’s a good news story for our editorial department, but it’s also good news for our advertisers as well,” sales and marketing director Glen Parker said. “It’s obvious that their message is getting out to a pretty vast audience.”

Mihaly said The Brandon Sun’s chief selling point remains its ability to share local stories and images in a manner that no other news agency does, a point that Parker supports.

“I think we do a really good job of keeping things local and providing information that isn’t available through any other source,” Parker said, adding that print publications have earned a reputation for being more reliable than that offered through most online-only entities.

“Even though we’ve been in this market for over 135 years we can’t rest on our laurels,” Mihaly said. “We are continually striving to make the product better. We will launch our second readership survey earlier in the new year, which will provide us with input and direction from our readers and non-readers. It is essential for us to receive input from the public so we can remain current and relevant to our readers and as a business.

“Bottom line we are local, part of the community and continue to support and promote activities and people of the Westman.”
