After six years with the City of Brandon, deputy city clerk Nathan Peto is moving on.

Peto has accepted the position of city manager in Portage la Prairie and will begin his new role Dec. 11.

“It was a great opportunity for me to go to the next step in my career,” said Peto, who also served as Brandon’s manager of corporate initiatives. “I’ve been working on my master’s degree, and working on professional experience within (the City of Brandon) organization and it just seemed like the next logical step … a great opportunity at the right time.”

Portage la Prairie City Council made the announcement on Monday via press release. Peto will take over for Jean-Marc Nadeau, who announced his departure last month.

“We want to welcome Nathan to the City of Possibilities,” said Portage Mayor Irvine Ferris. “We look forward to working with him to serve the needs of our citizens.”

According to Portage city council, Peto will be responsible for the management of a $31-million budget and a dedicated senior leadership team that oversees all departments within the city.

“He will be responsible for implementing strategic priorities to serve the citizens by identifying, evaluating, and meeting the community needs in accordance with policies and guidelines determined by council under the provisions of The Municipal Act,” states the press release.

Peto served as general manager of Brandon Chamber of Commerce before joining the team at Brandon City Hall in 2011. Reflecting on his time in the Wheat City, Peto had many fond memories and highlights.

“I really enjoyed working with the Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples’ Council, and I’ve been really proud to see what they’ve been able to achieve in the City of Brandon for becoming more inclusive for Aboriginal people,” he said.

Last week, Peto was presented with a star blanket from BUAPC, as a token of appreciation for his five years of support of the group.

Peto added that he has enjoyed working with Brandon’s Downtown Development Corporation and witnessing the progress on downtown revitalization.

“There’s too many small projects to mention, but I got the opportunity to work across this organization with every single department, and it’s been a really enjoyable experience.”

As for his next chapter, Peto said it is an honour to join the team in Portage. He is already familiar with the community, as his wife’s family is from the area.

“This is an opportunity for me to contribute my knowledge and experience toward the continuing growth and development of this great community. I look forward to working with Mayor Ferris and council, as well as the dedicated staff, in serving the people of Portage la Prairie.”
