The switch was flipped on three new Bell MTS LTE-A wireless sites in Manitoba on Tuesday, including one on Brandon’s North Hill.

This upgrade fills the final gap in Brandon’s LTE-A wireless network, enabling Bell MTS users throughout the Wheat City to benefit from peak theoretical data download speeds of between 300 and 600 Mbps.

This rate is more than twice the speed previously available.

The latest switch flip will offer greater data download speeds through a swath of the North Hill, between First Street and 18th Street, and the Trans-Canada Highway to the north and Kirkcaldy Drive to the south.

Bell MTS manager of media relations Jeremy Sawatzky said the expanded LTE-A would affect not only residents and businesses throughout the North Hill, but also those at the Brandon Municipal Airport.

Two Winnipeg neighbourhoods, including Sage Creek and Wildwood, also found their LTE-A wireless networks flipped on in an expansion that marks 85 per cent of the Bell MTS wireless network.

Within its broader context, yesterday’s expansion was part of the company’s five-year, $1-billion planned investment throughout Manitoba to deliver improved broadband networks.

Recent expansions have included the introduction of Bell MTS Fibe Internet services to more than 20 communities — a service that offers download speeds of up to 940 mbps and upload speeds of up to 100 mbps, which Sawatzky described as “up to 20 times faster than Internet speeds formerly available in these locations.”

In addition to Brandon, the fellow Westman communities of Carberry, Killarney, Minnedosa and Neepawa have also benefited from this expansion, Sawatzky said, adding, “We look forward to delivering further enhancements to ensure Westman residents have access to the best broadband network technologies available.”
