A 23-year-old man was arrested Friday morning after he allegedly crashed a stolen vehicle on Richmond Avenue and attempted to run away from police.

Sgt. Dave Andrew with the Brandon Police Service said charges are pending against the man, who is in custody for theft of a motor vehicle and flight from police.

Police received a report just after 10 a.m. of a stolen pickup truck that was left unlocked and running in a residential area on Cornwallis Crescent.

Officers spotted the vehicle travelling northbound near the First Street bridge at approximately 10:43 a.m. and tried to conduct a vehicle stop.

Andrew said the suspect refused to stop and officers began to pursue the vehicle across the city.

The pursuit wasn’t a high-speed chase, but at one point, the suspect rammed the pickup truck into a police cruiser in an alleyway near 26th Street and Richmond Avenue.

Police called off the pursuit, Andrew said, out of concern for the public’s safety, but officers later saw the pickup truck collide with another vehicle on Richmond Avenue, just east of 18th Street, at approximately 11:21 a.m. and spin out onto the median.

“Officers observed the male fleeing and engaged in a foot pursuit, and were able to apprehend the suspect in front of a business on Richmond Avenue,” Andrew said, adding there were no injuries as a result of the accident.

Chuck Elliott, general sales manager for Murray Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC, said one of the dealer’s autobody employees was involved in the vehicle collision.

He said the truck hit the employee on Richmond Avenue and pushed him onto the sidewalk, where he struck a fence in front of the dealership.

“It didn’t damage any of the new vehicles, just broke the fence,” Elliott said.

The employee was “shook up,” Elliot said, but was later seen walking around and giving statements to the police.
