Whether it’s carnival rides, music, comedy or horse shows, organizers from the Provincial Exhibition promise to bring the fair back into this year’s Manitoba Summer Fair.
“There are those that thrive on the thrill of the rides and there are those that just love the overall experience of the fair, the sideshow entertainment, the food, the shopping,” Ellen Murray, co-chair of the fair planning committee, said in a news release.
“The fair is a unique spectacle that only comes to town once a year offering sights you just don’t see every day in Brandon.”
The 136th Manitoba Summer Fair will be held from Wednesday to Sunday at the Keystone Centre, featuring rides from North American Midway Entertainment, which will be launching its Canadian tour in Brandon.
“We just closed on St. Louis and are super thrilled to be on our way to the summer fair in Brandon,” said Gregg Korek, vice-president of client relations for North American Midway Entertainment and president of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions.
“We have in our arsenal of thrill rides the newly refurbished Zipper that missed the tour last year as it underwent an extensive overhaul.”
A new feature this year is a Homecraft competition in the UCT Pavilion, where individuals will compete in events from quilting, knitting, crochet, needle craft, novelty craft and horticulture.
Provincial Exhibition general manager Ron Kristjansson said the competition will tie in with the historical displays set up at the Keystone Centre, showcasing the fair’s more than 130-year history.
“Just a little more of the old time fair feel,” he said.
Brandon Pride will also start its own celebration a few days early on Thursday with the Queer and Present Danger LGBTQ+ Comedy Showcase by the historic Dome Building, followed by Toronto’s Stacey Kay on Friday and Saturday.
A tailgate party has also been planned on Thursday for the I Love the ’90s tour at Westoba Place, featuring Vanilla Ice, All 4 One, DJ Kool, Snapp! and C&C Music Factory.
Before the festivities get underway on Wednesday, approximately 100 people will be sworn in as Canadian citizens at the Dome Building.
“We’re very honoured that they are able to do that at our fair and pleased to host them as our guests following the ceremony,” Kristjansson said.
The Manitoba Room will house the fair’s Kidz Zone, with a petting zoo, pony rides and live entertainment from Doodles the Clown, Markus Family Fun, the Skateboard Circus Show and Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo.
The Brandon Curling Club will also host multiple sports demonstrations from the Wheat City Roller Derby, Archers and Bowhunters Association of Manitoba and Pickleball, along with a $5,000 bingo night on Thursday.
On the main stage by the Dome Building, Indigo Circus, The Fire Guy Show, and local acts Jakeleg Blues Band, Roman Clarke and Julianna Moore, will all perform.
Horse shows, including miniature, hackney and draft, will be held in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence, while the Alberta Mini Chuckwagon races will take place in the outdoor show ring.
The traditional Cando Rail Breakfast will take place in the Dome Building on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. Visitors who pay $5 can spend the day at the fair and watch the Demo Derby and the car and bike show Chrome in the Trees.
