The provincial government has appointed former Brandon mayor Rick Borotsik to serve on the Manitoba Municipal Board for a three-year term.

Borotsik, who is one of eight new appointees, said he was extremely grateful and pleased, having served on the board as a member previously in the 1980s before he was sworn in as mayor of Brandon.

“The municipal board performs, in my opinion, a very important duty to the province of Manitoba,” he said.

Having that prior experience, as well as the years he spent in municipal politics, meant he wouldn’t be “starting from scratch,” Borotsik added.

In a statement from the provincial government, Municipal Relations Minister Jeff Wharton said they were pleased to add the new appointees to the board and were looking forward to their important contributions.

“These individuals all bring a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience, which will ensure the Manitoba Municipal Board can address long-standing challenges and work effectively for Manitobans,” he said.

The Manitoba Municipal Board is a quasi-judicial tribunal, established under The Municipal Board Act, which oversees cases that can’t be resolved at the municipal level, such as zoning disputes or tax assessment appeals.

The annexation of 170 acres southwest of the Patricia Avenue and Highway 10 intersection from the RM of Cornwallis, for example, was approved by the municipal board.

To date, the province says approximately 2,500 files remain open, some dating back to 2009.

Borotsik was first elected to Brandon City Council in 1977 before stepping down in 1985. In 1989, he was elected mayor of Brandon, defeating four-time incumbent Ken Burgess, and would serve in the role until 1997.

As mayor, Borotsik helped bring the 1995 World Curling Championships and 1997 Canada Summer Games to Brandon.

Following his career in municipal politics, Borotsik ran in the federal riding of Brandon-Souris, winning the seat in the 1997 election for the Progressive Conservatives.

He stepped down before the 2004 election and a few years later won the Manitoba constituency of Brandon West in 2007. He announced his departure from politics in December 2010.

The seven other appointees to the Manitoba Municipal Board are Gilles Vielfaure (Portage la Prairie), Roxane Anderson (Selkirk), Donald Mitchelson (Winnipeg), Margaret Bonekamp (St. Georges), Amit Kapoor (Winnipeg), Valerie Whyte (Pukatawagan) and Michael Kowalson (Winnipeg). Steven Lupky (Winnipeg) was reappointed.
