Thirty carpentry and woodworking students from Assiniboine Community College have built new homes for 15 dogs from Ebb and Flow First Nation.

The project was spearheaded by Brandon real estate agent Zach Munn, who last year approached Kevin Poirier, chair of construction trades at Assiniboine, about building the doghouses.

Assiniboine students provided the labour, while Munn paid for the materials with the help of donations.

Some of the doghouses were customized with extra trim, curtained doors and in one case a crescent moon.

“Thanks to Assiniboine for all their help. The doghouses were tremendous,” Munn said in a news release.

“They’re really well-built. Kevin and the staff and students at Assiniboine were very supportive to undertake the task they did. I think it’s great to implement trades programs to help charitable causes.”

Ebb and Flow was the third First Nations community to receive the doghouses, after Munn made similar trips to Peguis First Nation and Sapotaweyak Cree Nation.

Munn received permission to visit each community from chief and council, and was accompanied by someone who knew the community and could identify the dog owners who could use the doghouses.

Altogether, the materials used to build the doghouses cost $2,857.35. Munn also provided $342 in donations that he raised through Facebook.

Caring for animals runs in Munn’s family. His aunt, Tracy Munn, is the shelter manager and director for the Brandon Humane Society, while his sister, Farran LeBlanc, runs a mobile spay and neuter clinic called Pawsitive Communities.

Munn said that he intends on approaching Assiniboine again for help on another round of doghouses.

“Assiniboine offered to build again next year. Likely in the fall, I’ll start building again myself, and then I’ll fundraise for another trip and organize the help.”
