A Juno-nominated group will be coming to Brandon later this month to perform a concert at Knox United Church, with the Prairie Blend Men’s Choir as special guests.

The Canadian Chamber Choir will headline the concert on Sept. 28, with the show beginning at 8 p.m.

“The CCC is delighted to be returning to Manitoba,” artistic director Dr. Julia Davids said in a press release.

“Many of us remember fondly our very first concert, held in Brandon 17 years ago, (and) we’re excited to be reconnecting with good friends and fans from previous tours.”

It will be the first time the choir will perform in Manitoba in nearly 10 years. For choir member Naomi Russell, it will be nice to get the opportunity to perform in her hometown, she said.

“There’s something really special about your worlds colliding, like you’re bringing your CCC family in to meet the rest of your family and friends in Brandon,” the Brandon-based choir member said.

“It’s a small community and everybody is connected musically, so just getting the word out there that we’re coming and hearing the excitement is really neat.”

It’s a good opportunity for people in Brandon to come out and hear a Juno-nominated organization, she said, and the concert will be unique to Brandon.

“It’s definitely not like going to the Keystone for a country western or a rock concert, but you know the aspects of life that we sort of pay heed to in our music and the messages that we’re trying to get across we hope appeal to everyone,” Russell said.

“We hope that anybody who loves good music will consider coming to the concert.”

The choir performs Canadian-composed music only, and is the first major choir to do so, according to a press release.

Their most recent recording called “Sacred Reflections of Canada — a Canadian Mass” was nominated for a 2016 Juno Award for outstanding classical recording: vocal or choral.

In addition to the concert, the group will also be giving workshops for students while they’re in Brandon, including at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, École secondaire Neelin High School and Vincent Massey High School.

“We do concerts on the road but we also try to reach as many singers of all ages and stages as we possibly can,” said Andy Rice, general manager of the Canadian Chamber Choir.

“By meeting up with some community choirs and some school groups and really trying to make connections there we try to further the choral tradition as best as we can,” Rice added.

Admission for the concert is $20, and tickets can be purchased at Ted Good Music, Surridge’s Music and online at eventbrite.ca.
