A Grade 1 student from Brandon had one of her dreams come true late last month when she met music icon Ed Sheeran.
Scarlett Jervis, 6, had the opportunity to meet Sheeran, after a video that her mom, Jasmine Jervis, posted was seen by the right people.
“It just kind of showed a lot about her life and her struggles,” Jasmine said. “Everybody got really involved and shared it and people sent it to different websites and it got really big, and then it fell into the right persons lap that managed to get it to his management.”
It started out just talking about how she would lose her mind if she ever met Sheeran, and it progressed from there.
“I had already read about how he had met lots of people before who kind of like had like life struggles in some way, so I made a video,” she said. “I’ve never done anything like that before.”
Scarlett was born with Charge syndrome, which involves a lot of medical challenges. When the current Riverheights student was eight weeks old, she had open heart surgery. It was supposed to be a pretty common surgery, her mom said, but things didn’t go as planned. She was on life support for quite a few days.
“We thought we lost her a couple of times, we weren’t sure if she was going to come back, but she did, she rallied but with lots and lots of complications.”
The six-year-old now has a team of about 15 doctors and specialists, and has problems with her eyes, her ears, her balance and her hip. However, each day she’s getting a little bit better, her mom said.
“She’s in a wheelchair to get around but she also has a walker that she uses, so she’s getting stronger and stronger each day.”
With all the challenges Scarlett faces on a daily basis, getting to meet Sheeran was a nice bright spot, Jasmine said.
They were invited to attend a meet and greet before his concert in Minneapolis in October, which they were going to for Scarlett’s sixth birthday.
“He’s her absolute favourite. She knows all his songs and she knows what albums that they’re all from,” Jasmine said. “She knows all facts about him, she wants to research about him, we’re constantly having to Google information about him because she has certain questions all the time.”
When they went to meet him before the concert, Scarlett was over the moon, her mom said.
“She was so excited she didn’t really know what to do first,” Jasmine said. “She had all these questions, but she was also hugging him at the same time.”
Among Sheeran’s and Scarlett’s heavy conversation topics during their meet and greet was their mutual love of pizza, and how Chicago pizza is one of the best.
“There were lots of giggles,” her mom said.
Scarlett spend a lot of time at hospital appointments and in therapy, and it will be nice to look back on the selfies Sheeran took with her last month moving forward, she said.
“There’s a lot of hard times in her life, so it’s just always good to be able to refer back to something that’s a really, really good moment and a really cool thing to be able to look back on for her,” she said.
One of those hospital appointments is coming up for Scarlett at the end of November, when she’s scheduled to have another surgery.
“When we’re going into that, to be able to show her the videos from when we were there and show her the pictures, it will lift her spirits, and it always will,” she said.
