A pair of classes from Green Acres School have come first in the city’s eighth annual Waste Reduction School Challenge.

Susan Wright’s Grade 1 class and Meredith Walker’s Grade 5/6 class won first place in their respective grade categories.

Both were awarded benches made from recycled materials and coupons to the Sportsplex. The two classrooms also received visits from Mayor Rick Chrest.

The annual event is presented by the City of Brandon’s Environmental Initiatives Section and funded by Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba, a not-for-profit organization that operates a province-wide recycling program for packaging and printed paper.

From Oct. 9-26, 10 classrooms from across the Brandon School Division had five bins to sort their recycling and waste, and also collected compost from lunches and snack times.

Classrooms earned points based on the amount of recyclables and compostables they collected.

Points were also awarded by completing waste reduction activities, such as bringing litter-free lunches, mentoring other classes on waste reduction, cleaning their school grounds, celebrating the plastics and textiles theme days, and pledging to continue their waste reduction programs for the rest of the school year.

The challenge featured classes of Grade 1 to 6 students from École Harrison, Green Acres, King George, George Fitton, Meadows, J.R. Reid and Valleyview Centennial schools all taking part.
