Longtime Brandon fire Chief Brent Dane announced his retirement on Thursday.

Dane has spent 36 years with Brandon Fire & Emergency Services, 14 of them as chief.

At the age of 61, Dane said it was time to hang up his helmet.

“I’ve hit the point that I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve had a good career, so I think I should give opportunity for other people to assume this position of chief, and give them opportunity to put their touch on the job,” Dane said.

Deputy fire Chief Scott McDonald will take over the position on Feb. 1, when Dane’s retirement becomes official.

Dane spent his entire career in Brandon. He graduated from École secondaire Neelin High School, and in 1985 he started working as a firefighter/paramedic in the Wheat City.

He joined because he wanted to do a job that would be exciting and helpful to people in the community, he said, adding that in 36 years it has fulfilled his expectations.

“It’s been an exciting ride, just purely because we’ve had to change and adapt to a lot (and) take on more responsibilities in the community,” he said. “I think the department has done a good job of keeping up to all those things.”

Throughout his time in Brandon, Dane played a large part in the design of Firehall No. 1, and worked as one of the project managers on its construction.

After a decades-long career, he said the decision to walk away has been a difficult one and that he will miss working with the people at the fire hall.

“I’ve been coming to work for the Brandon fire department for 36 years,” he said. “Now, in a very short time here, I’m going to wake up and there’ll be the day I don’t have to go to work, and that will be very interesting because I’ve been doing it for so long.”

However, now that he’s retired, he said that he’ll have more time to spend with his grandkids, and just enjoy life.

McDonald has been part of the department’s management team for a long time, and said he is ready to take on the new position. He started out as a firefighter/paramedic, and worked his way into a leadership role.

“I think he’s well equipped to take on the role and responsibilities and the challenges it will present to him,” Dane said.

McDonald said he’s looking forward to taking on the challenges that the chief position carries. In his new position, he’ll be overseeing all the aspects of the City of Brandon’s delivery of emergency services.

“I’m looking forward to the next step in my career,” McDonald said.
