Brandon’s Payless ShoeSource location at Shoppers Mall is poised to close after the company announced it will go into creditor protection in the United States and Canada.

An employee at the store who answered the phone on Wednesday said the store’s manager would not be in until today, and directed questions to the company’s marketing department.

Payless ShoeSource did not return a request for comment by press time Wednesday.

No sign indicating the store is closing had gone up outside the Brandon location as of Wednesday morning.

Kim James, general manager of Shoppers Mall, said the mall is disappointed with the news that the company is closing North American stores and is working on finding a new store to move into the space. She said the new retailer will be announced when plans are solidified.

A statement on Payless ShoeSource’s website says all stores in North America will be closed by the end of May and liquidation sales in Canada will begin “shortly.”

The statement says the company was unable to survive in today’s retail marketplace.

The discount shoe chain currently operates 248 locations across Canada and 2,500 in North America.
