Nominations are now open for The Brandon Sun’s Community Leader Awards, and will remain open until April 30.

There are several categories someone can be nominated in — Coach, Teacher, Courage/Bravery, Above and Beyond, Emergency Service, Service Organization Volunteer, Volunteer, Youth Volunteer, Environmental Leader, Community Builder, Seniors Advocate and Community Leader of the Year.

Joanne Malkowich was recognized with the Above and Beyond Award last year, along with her late husband, Steve Malkowich.

“I got kind of emotional when they announced our name, you know, because I love Brandon and I love doing volunteer work,” Malkowich said.

The Above and Beyond award is given to a person who makes a positive contribution to their community, and goes above and beyond to make it a better place.

Bob Caldwell was nominated in the coach category last year. He helps to run hockey practices in Deloraine, where he lives, and runs a breakfast club in Deloraine and Hartney. It was a surprise to be nominated last year, Caldwell said.

“I didn’t know anything about it, but it was a real honour for The Brandon Sun to do that and to take the time and recognize people in the southwest,” he said.

He doesn’t do it for the recognition, he said, but to help the kids. The biggest reward for him is watching them improve.

Dayle Hughson was recognized as a finalist in the service organizer volunteer category last year for the work she does with the Brandon Sunset Rotary Club.

“It’s kind of nice to be recognized for things that you,” Hughson said. “Not that we’re expecting a reward, because you like to volunteer and give your time, but it’s very nice to be rewarded a little bit for it and recognized for what you do.”

Nominations can be entered online at brandonsun.com, by email to cla@brandonsun.com or by mail at ATTENTION CLA NOMINEE 501 Rosser Ave., Brandon, MB R7A 0K4.

Submissions should be approximately 250 words in length and include information such as: length of time nominee has spent in the community; specific examples of the work and/or contribution they have made; community associations and memberships. References are also required of other people who can provide support on the nominee’s behalf.
