The Brandon Sun has received a National Newspaper Award nomination in local reporting for court reporter Erin DeBooy’s seven-part series on the impact that methamphetamine has had on the Brandon community.
DeBooy is among the 63 finalists, nominated in 21 different categories, in this year’s 70th National Newspaper Awards, including The Sun’s own sister paper the Winnipeg Free Press.
The award for local reporting is given for exceptional reporting of a significant local issue.
“I feel very honoured to be recognized, I’m also in shock a bit,” DeBooy said. “It’s an issue that needed to come to the forefront of the conversation and I also feel so grateful for the families who trusted me with their stories and really helped bring to light what this drug is doing to our people and to our community.”
Described by the National Newspaper Awards as “an unflinching look at the personal and human toll caused by methamphetamine use in her community,” The Sun published the first installment of DeBooy’s series, “Rock Bottom,” nearly a year ago on April 28, 2018.
In the weeks that followed, DeBooy’s stories highlighted the voices of addicts and their families, politicians and police, as well as those trying to find a solution to a problem that has spread across Manitoba and much of the Prairies.
Also nominated for the award in local reporting are Grant LaFleche from the St. Catharines Standard and Greg Mercer from the Waterloo Region Record.
“Erin’s definitive series on the rising scourge of methamphetamine in Brandon hit all the right notes,” Sun managing editor Matt Goerzen said. “‘Rock Bottom’ is an informative, well-researched and provoking series that shines a light on the drug-induced nightmare affecting our city. Her nomination for the National Newspaper Awards is well deserved, in my opinion.”
“Erin’s seven-part series also sparked a similar set of stories from our sister paper, the Winnipeg Free Press — ‘Ice Storm: Manitoba’s Meth Crisis,’” Goerzen added.
“While I am pleased to see reporters from both The Brandon Sun and the Free Press receive such accolades, I hope the work these talented people have done, and continue to do, will prompt workable solutions.”
The Sun has won three national newspaper awards in the past, the first in 1961 for an editorial by Lubor Zink and twice by photographer Tim Smith for best feature photo in 2010 and 2015.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto on May 3.
