The former Sobeys location at 1645 18th St. is looking for a new tenant.

A listing on developer Shindico’s website shows the space is available to be subleased.

Speaking to The Sun, Shindico president and CEO Sandy Shindleman confirmed that Sobeys still holds the lease for the space, but said he couldn’t disclose when it expires.

When the Sobeys move was announced in May 2016, Shindleman said “We know groceries are important to the community and we are hopeful that Sobeys continues to operate their store. If not, we hope they will allow for another food retailer to fill this space.”

This appears not to be the case, as Shindleman told The Sun on Tuesday that Shindico is helping Sobeys look for a tenant, but the grocery chain does not want to have another grocery store move into the space.

“Most people want to put groceries in there,” said Shindleman. “We can’t do that. They (Sobeys) don’t want that.”

Sobeys moved to the vacant space once occupied by Target in Shoppers Mall in July 2017, opening what was then the largest Sobeys location in Canada. That site had been empty since Target closed all of its Canadian locations in April 2015 following the ill-fated expansion into the country.

At the time, The Sun reported that Sobeys added 50 new employees and doubled the amount of fresh food they offer when the new location opened.

Its former home across the street between Staples and a Liquor Mart has been dormant in the two years since the move. The building is listed as having approximately 4000 square meters of space.

Shoppers Drug Mart also moved from its previous location on 18th Street to Shoppers Mall in November 2018, but The Sun reported on June 21 that a tenant had signed a conditional lease for part of that building.

Sobeys was asked for comment on the progress of finding a new tenant, but did not respond by deadline.
