Waywayseecappo First Nation band members have voted in favour of a multimillion-dollar land settlement.
The Waywayseecappo First Nation Treaty Four —1874 Referendum vote was held Monday to decide whether band members will accept a $287-million settlement and commitment to an additional reserve creation of 21,013 acres, as well as the resulting trust fund that would be created to hold the money.
A Facebook post shared by Waywayseecappo First Nation Coun. Chantel Morgan at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday indicated that the “yes” vote won. The information shared by Morgan comes from Facebook user Gabrielle Cote.
The post by Cote states that there was a voter turnout of 951 people.
The unofficial tally of votes was 854 were in favour of accepting the land settlement, while 45 ballots voted no. There were a reported 23 spoiled ballots.
The Sun reached out to multiple sources to confirm the results of the ratification vote, including Chief Murray Clearsky, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada and the Manitoba Region Indigenous Services Canada.
When reached for comment Tuesday afternoon, Clearsky would not confirm how the majority of votes fell.
“There’s no more negative stuff here,” Clearsky said. When asked for further comment, the chief ended the interview and said he would be sending a press release to Winnipeg.
“You’ll hear it tomorrow, no more negative stuff by you,” Chief Clearsky said.
Indigenous Services Canada Manitoba was contacted to confirm the vote on the settlement and directed the Sun to contact their headquarters in Ottawa.
Indigenous Services Canada did not respond by press time and was unable to confirm the vote results and could not confirm if final numbers had been tallied.
