Terry Hayward is the Liberal candidate in Brandon-Souris, the party announced on Wednesday.

The former diplomat is no stranger to elections, having run in three previous federal races and two provincial ones. However, Hayward has never run in Westman before.

Speaking to The Sun, Hayward said that he lives with his wife in Anola but that the party reached out to him to run in Brandon-Souris. Hayward said he was born and raised in Brandon, graduating from what was then Harrison High School.

“We were looking for candidates in Brandon-Souris and when that failed to materialize, the party reached out to me and I said ‘Well, why wouldn’t I?’,” he said. “It’s my hometown, I’ve got a lot of relatives in the southern part of the riding.”

According to Hayward, the key issues for the people of Brandon-Souris in this election are having a fiscally responsible government, health care and pharmacare, living costs, seniors issues and benefits for young families.

When asked if he thought Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s recent blackface scandal would be damaging to the party’s chances in this election, Hayward said he didn’t think so, but it was up to the individual voter.

Personally, Hayward said he accepts Trudeau’s apology for the three incidents.

“Any apology that’s given as heartfelt as that by anyone, I would certainly accept,” he said.

Though his residence isn’t in the area, Hayward said that he would be in the riding for the rest of the campaign except for a brief trip away to celebrate his granddaughter’s birthday.

Most recently, he was the Manitoba Liberals’ candidate for the constituency in Lac du Bonnet in this year’s provincial election. He placed third behind Progressive Conservative incumbent Wayne Ewasko and NDP candidate Sidney Klassen.

In the 2016 provincial election, Hayward ran in the constituency of Dawson Trail and finished third in polling.

Hayward unsuccessfully ran three times for the federal Liberals in the riding of Provencher. He ran in the 2015 and 2011 general elections as well as the 2013 byelection to replace the retiring Vic Toews.

Now that he has earned the party’s nomination, Hayward said that he was going out to get the last needed signatures for his Elections Canada paperwork on Wednesday night.
