A 63-year-old man who was reported injured in a residential explosion in the 200 block of Queens Avenue East last week has now been charged in the death of a 63-year-old woman who was also found at the scene.
The 63-year-old woman was found in the wreckage of the home following the blast at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. The man had been airlifted by STARS air ambulance to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg with unspecified injuries.
Police investigators and the Office of the Fire Commissioner were on scene investigating the cause of the explosion as a strong smell of natural gas was noted in the area upon the arrival of emergency workers. On Saturday, a press release from the Brandon Police Service stated that members of BPS Major Crimes Section have continued to investigate in co-operation with the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
The investigation has led police to determine that the death of the female was not accidental.
On Friday, BPS Major Crime Section members went to Winnipeg Health Science Centre where the 63-year-old male suspect was being released from medical care, and arrested him. Police say that on Friday evening, he was brought back to Brandon and lodged at Brandon Correctional Centre. He was slated to appear in court on a charge of second-degree murder on Saturday.
The press release states that more information regarding this incident will be released at Brandon Police Service today at 11 a.m. Police said no further information will be released until that time.
A Land Titles search by The Brandon Sun earlier this week named the registered owners of the house as Robert Keith Hughes and Betty Anne Hughes. According to the document, the land transfer was registered on Aug. 15.
Neighbours on Wednesday said the couple had moved into the house within the last couple of months. Hughes could be seen doing work on the outside of the house. The neighbours also said a for sale sign had been placed on the lawn of the property either Monday or Tuesday.
When reached by the Sun earlier this week, the family of the couple were not prepared to give any statements to media.
