A Saskatchewan man who broke into a Brandon business before being caught in a stolen vehicle with a pile of stolen goods has been sentenced to almost five months of time served.

Ronald Saftner pleaded guilty in Brandon provincial court on Monday to multiple charges, including break and enter to commit theft, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime.

On Nov. 24, police received a call from a security company advising there was an intruder at the Enns Brothers location on 18th Street North, Crown attorney Caroline Lacey said.

Police reviewed video surveillance and saw a man in a black jacket who appeared to be carrying some windshield washer fluid, Lacey said.

Officers arrived on scene and saw the suspect flee to the back of the property, Lacey said. They followed the tracks, which led out to numerous businesses.

Police set up a perimeter and called in the canine unit, Lacey said. While waiting for the canine unit to arrive, a pickup truck came down the service road and was stopped by officers.

The truck was being driven by a woman and a man who matched the suspect’s description — later identified as Saftner — was in the passenger seat.

Numerous items were found in the truck with tags on them from Winners and Value Village, Lacey said.

Police also learned later the truck they were driving had been reported stolen that evening.

Saftner has numerous entries on his criminal record, Lacey said, recommending a sentence of his time in pre-sentence custody — 140 days — would be appropriate.

Defence lawyer Andrew Synyshyn agreed with the recommendation, noting it wasn’t a complex crime.

Saftner has struggled with substance abuse since an early age, Synyshyn added, but has been considering his substance use while in custody and looking at ways to move forward.

Judge Donovan Dvorak sentenced Saftner to just under five months of time served to be followed by one year of unsupervised probation.
