At a time when more people might be considering picking up an old hobby or learning a new skill, a local music shop is making it a little easier to get acquainted with the old six string.

After having to suspend private guitar lessons due to COVID-19, Faders Music is now offering free online lessons twice a week for anyone who wants to tune in.

“We thought it would be cool if we did something online for free for anyone who is interested,” said Faders Music owner Chris Nylen, adding they’ve had a huge response to their first two classes this past week.

“We had a lot of viewers and a ton of comments, people seem to be really enjoying it. We put it out there having no expectations, just thinking it was a nice thing to offer and a cool idea that might be kinda fun, but the response really came quick and has been very positive overall.”

Music can be a great mood-booster for people who are self-isolating, Nylen said, noting a lot of major artists are live-streaming free concerts and using music to connect with people as well.

“Even before the pandemic started, we would have musicians come in to buy instruments and music enthusiasts coming in that are buying vinyl records … It’s a good way to keep yourself feeling not so down in the dumps about what’s going on in the world,” he said. “It’s a great time, and it beats just sitting around watching Netflix all day; some music doesn’t hurt.”

While the front doors are locked, the store is still open, he said, and they’ve been able to assist a few people who wanted to take the free lesson but needed an instrument.

“We’ve been able to hook people up with curb-side delivery or home delivery of guitars and all that stuff as well,” Nylen said. “For those who don’t have an instrument, we can help them out with getting it.”

With the response being so positive, Nylen said they are considering adding lessons for different instruments as well, as Faders usually offers bass guitar, ukulele, piano, drums and singing lessons.

They are also considering looking at adding options for offering private online lessons, he said.

“We’re going to go twice a week for the next few weeks and see where it goes from there.”

The free online guitar lessons stream on Faders Music’s Facebook page on Mondays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.

More information can also be found on the store’s website at faders.ca.
