A Minnedosa man’s program to teach families about the countries of the world is now free for Manitobans for the next three months thanks to a provincial government grant.

Country of the Week, which is being developed by Westman resident Dave Ternier, is a free program designed to teach children about the diverse countries of the world — one week at a time.

After funding from the Safe at Home MB program, it’s now free for the next three months for Manitoba residents as a way for people to learn while the pandemic keeps them home-bound.

“To have it be recognized in such a way is truly quite validating,” Ternier said.

“It makes all of the moments when starting up any new business, it makes the moments of ‘Gosh, is this going to work?’ it makes all of those worth living through, that’s for sure.”

The program gives people access to printable materials, colouring sheets, word searches and links to YouTube videos to help kids learn.

Ternier started Country of the Week approximately four years ago as a way to teach his daughters, Marika and Kiana, about different countries.

He then decided to open it up to everyone to share his work and hopefully foster curiosity in even more children.

When reached on Friday, Ternier said he was currently working on Cuba, which he said has taught his children about the domino-playing tradition of the Caribbean country.

With the provincial funding, Ternier said he will be able to take Country of the Week to new heights and potentially start developing material for older kids in the future.

“I hope this encourages people to stick around home just a little bit more until we get through this awful situation that none of us are in by choice — but we all have to live in together,” he said.

“There’s a lot of adventuring you can do from home, there really, really is.”
