The staff and students of Glenboro School are putting the issue of food security front and centre by partnering with the Sara’s Pantry initiative and using a provincial grant to kick-start a new fresh fruit program.

According to a Wednesday news release, Glenboro School principal Ryan Diehl had been involved with Sara’s Pantry for months before the group started providing community members with healthy food hampers in January.

“I attended an initial meeting just to find more information from a community member standpoint,” Diehl told the Sun over the phone. “And from that initial meeting, I started thinking about how the school could possibly become involved.”

Around that same time, Glenboro School also received a $5,000 grant from the province’s Healthy Together Now program, which will allow Sara’s Pantry to help deliver daily fresh fruit and healthy snacks to students starting next week.

“We’re going to start it off as a program with our kindergarten to Grade 8s, with the hopes of expanding into our high school students as well,” Diehl said.

Once this program gets rolling, the Glenboro School principal also wants to get students involved with the logistics of delivering the food, in the hopes of hammering home the prevalence of food insecurity in rural Manitoba.

“I think there is sometimes this idea that food not being on the table is an urban issue,” he said. “But it’s happening everywhere, even in our small town. So we wanted to make sure that our kids are certainly aware of that.”

Grade 10 Glenboro student Sophia Anderson has already taken this idea to heart, since she took it upon herself to launch an Instagram account for Sara’s Panty (@saras.pantry) that is designed to highlight its various distribution dates and services to the public.

Not only will Anderson be responsible for managing the online presence of Sara’s Pantry until she graduates, but she’s also working with Diehl to create a permanent student position for the Instagram account.

“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to help out for such an important cause,” the Grade 10 student said in Wednesday’s news release. “I love helping people, so being able to be a part of an organization that is going to make a difference in and around the community is something I’m thankful for.”

Overall, Diehl hopes that this new partnership with Sara’s Pantry will also seep its way into Glenboro School’s classrooms and lesson plans, especially since the issue of food insecurity is more visible than ever due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Learning about food security and the importance of building your community up together are important life skills,” he said. “Being a part of Sara’s Pantry provides excellent learning opportunities for our students.”

The community of Glenboro is located roughly 80 kilometres southeast of Brandon.
