Both George Fitton School and Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School were flagged with new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, which marks the first time the Brandon School Division has publicly disclosed a COVID case since January.
BSD released the news about George Fitton on their website, revealing that the one confirmed case is connected to someone in a Grade 8 class who might have been infectious when they attended school on Monday.
The news release went on to claim that “the infection was not believed to be acquired at school,” and that “close contacts have been identified and are advised to self-isolate along with their household members.”
However, the one new case at Crocus Plains was identified through the province’s school COVID tracker map and not the BSD website.
BSD acting superintendent Mathew Gustafson later clarified that the province did not brief the division about this case, since the subject in question never attended the school while they were infectious.
“Public health will contact us when there’s a case where there could be some communicability,” he said. “And so, that was not the case here.”
These two cases come after Boissevain School and Virden Collegiate Institute officials announced they will be suspending in-person learning until April 23 after COVID cases were recently discovered in each institution.
However, Gustafson told the Sun on Thursday afternoon that George Fitton and Crocus Plains will remain open.
Elsewhere in the Westman region, Melita School and Birtle Elementary School are also enduring a fresh COVID case, respectively, according to the province’s school COVID tracker map.
None of these new cases have been identified as variants of concern except for one of the cases at Virden Collegiate Institute.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the province identified 152 current COVID cases in Manitoba schools for the 14 days prior to April 14, including 39 variants of concern.
