To encourage Manitobans to recycle, Recycle Everywhere announced a new mobile app and incentive program on Thursday.
The Recycle Everywhere app allows Manitobans to track their recycling for a chance to win up to $25,000 in cash and prizes.
After the program’s first month, winner Colin Bazin received a cheque for $5,000.
“The Recycle Everywhere incentive program and mobile app is about encouraging Manitobans to recover more empty beverage containers by giving back,” stated Ken Friesen, executive director of the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association in a release.
“With cash and prizes, we are supporting local businesses and Manitobans as we slowly come out of the pandemic.”
Friesen added that only 77 per cent of PET plastic bottles were recycled in 2019. He says that people can step up and recycle all No. 1 plastic containers and all container materials so they don’t end up in the environment as litter.
“Recycle Everywhere continues to be a leader among beverage container recycling programs in North America because it is highly responsive to and supportive of Manitobans’ recycling behaviours, and because it is focused on the big picture — reducing litter across the province,” Climate and Conservation Minister Sarah Guillemard stated in the release.
