With the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the province hard, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s leadership has decided to cancel the Manitoba Summer Fair for the second year in a row.

It’s the second event the organization has had to cancel for two years running, with the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To make up for the cancellation, Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba president Greg Crisanti said COVID-friendly events are being developed for when the summer fair usually runs. More information on this will be announced next week.

He said the exhibition is currently 37 per cent toward this year’s $350,000 fundraising goal. This is the amount the organization needs to raise in order to pay bills and stay afloat.

While Crisanti said he’s proud of the hard work the organization’s staff has put in for fundraising, he said the organization isn’t out of the woods yet.

The Love A Fair fundraising campaign has been hard at work, running several events to bring in much-needed cash.

Current fundraising efforts include wine and meat packs sales for the May long weekend, an online 50/50 draw, a GoFundMe campaign and the Your Name in Stone at the Dome campaign, where individuals and businesses can pay to have their names and logo engraved on one of the stones on the pathways outside the Dome Building.

Engineering company Atco is currently matching all donations made through the Love A Fair campaign up to $20,000. The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg is also matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 for the campaign.

Crisanti is hopeful that with more and more Manitobans getting vaccinated, they will still be able to run the Manitoba Ag Ex later this year.
