There were 594 new cases of COVID-19 announced in Manitoba on Friday.
The province also announced three more COVID-related deaths during Friday’s media update.
The dead include a woman in her 50s from the Interlake-Eastern health region linked to the B.1.1.7 variant of concern, a woman in her 80s from the Prairie Mountain Health region linked to an outbreak at the Russell Health Centre, and a woman in her 90s from the Prairie Mountain Health region linked to the B.1.1.7 variant of concern.
The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 14.1 per cent provincially and 16.1 per cent in Winnipeg. Six cases have been removed due to data correction, bringing the net-new number of cases Friday to 588 and the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba since the pandemic started to 47,504.
The following is how Friday’s cases broke down by health region:
• 39 cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region
• 26 cases in Northern
• 54 cases in Prairie Mountain Health
• 55 cases in Southern Health-Santé Sud
• 420 cases in Winnipeg
There were 4,855 active cases of COVID-19 in the province Friday, of which 335 were in Prairie Mountain Health. Among the districts within the Westman-wide health region, Brandon led the pack with 107 active cases.
There have been a total of 555 B.1.1.7 variants in Prairie Mountain Health, 135 unspecified variants and 14 cases of the P1 variant.
There were 236 people in hospital with active COVID-19 as well as 60 people in hospital with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require care, for a total of 296 hospitalizations.
There were 56 people in intensive care units with active COVID-19 as well as 23 people with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care, for a total of 79 intensive care patients.
VACCINE UPDATE
With a goal of 2,000 to 4,000 vaccines administered in four to six weeks starting April 21, 1,000 Manitoba truck drivers have received a vaccine in North Dakota in the Essential Worker Cross-Border Vaccination Initiative.
This, according to a release issued Friday by Economic Development and Jobs Minister Ralph Eichler.
The first clinic opened April 21 at a northbound rest area on Interstate 29 near Drayton, N.D.
The Manitoba Trucking Association helped its members receive the vaccine by identifying and co-ordinating eligible truckers.
By co-ordinating with North Dakota, truck drivers transporting goods from the U.S have been able to schedule vaccination appointments on their routine trips.
The state and province established a joint operations group to manage the initiative.
Manitoba truck drivers are still eligible to receive a vaccine at two clinics in North Dakota, which are located at:
• Oriska rest area on Interstate 94 near Tower City every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Drayton every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
These locations and hours will be effective into June.
