A project four years in the making has finally been completed at Brandon Municipal Airport.

The new maintenance building first announced on July 14, 2017, has been completed.

According to a release sent out by the city on Tuesday, the new building adds 11,000 square feet (approximately 1,022 square metres) of space to store fire rescue and maintenance equipment as well as six vehicle and equipment bays.

Additionally, the new building is closer to the runway, which will improve response times to aircraft incidents.

The $2.5-million project was equally funded by a partnership between the City of Brandon, the Government of Canada and the Government of Manitoba, with each contributing $833,333.

The federal and provincial funding came from the Small Communities Fund Program, which supports infrastructure projects in Canadian communities with fewer than 100,000 residents.

In comments included with a media release sent out by the city, federal Northern Affairs Minister Daniel Vandal said the investment would improve airport safety in Brandon, while provincial Central Services Minister and Brandon West Progressive Conservative MLA Reg Helwer called it an investment in making Manitoba a must-visit destination.

“We’re pleased to have been able to partner with the provincial and federal governments to see the completion of the new Brandon Municipal Airport maintenance building,” Mayor Rick Chrest was quoted as saying. “The modern design has resulted in a more efficient environment for staff and has lowered operating costs.”
