Manitoba Public Insurance is warning drivers to be cautious as agricultural equipment makes its way onto provincial roads during the harvest.

There are an average of 48 collisions on roads involving agricultural and passenger vehicles each year, according to MPI data.

Five people die on average every year in crashes between the two types of vehicles.

“Observance of road safety is key to keeping our roadways safe during harvest season,” MPI’s chief customer officer, Satvir Jatana, stated in a press release.

“While some areas of the province are experiencing severe drought, many other producers are on the roadways moving their machinery. Crops are coming off the fields and large agriculture machinery will be travelling on roadways. It’s important motorists be aware and drive responsibly.

Farm equipment is large and slow-moving, so drivers need to be careful when passing.

Producers also need to be careful and make sure equipment is fitted with lights and reflectors. Equipment is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem on the back, red reflectors on the back right and left sides and lighting.

Equipment has a maximum speed of 40 km/h, according to MPI, so it can be easy for drivers to misjudge their speed of approach.

Extra diligence is needed between dawn and dusk, when equipment can be difficult to see on the road.
