Rural libraries will receive $769,000 in funding from the province, the Manitoba government announced Friday.

According to a provincial representative, $87,340 is earmarked for the Western Manitoba Regional Library and its branches located in Brandon, Carberry, Glenboro, Hartney and Neepawa.

WMRL acting director Will Enns told the Sun this money will be distributed to each branch on a per-capita basis.

“We have the population figures for our contributing municipalities and we’ll try and divvy it up as fair as possible,” he said Friday afternoon.

Enns revealed that these funds will likely be used to cover routine expenses instead of special projects, since the cost of books and other related commodities have been increasing for years now.

Enns also said that basic provincial library funding hasn’t increased since the mid-1990s and wasn’t sure if this $87,340 boost would be able to make up for almost three decades worth of inflation.

But WMRL has received special projects funding through other sources, Enns explained, including Westman Mental Wellness and the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation.

The province did fund two COVID-19 vaccination clinics organized by the WMRL this fall.
