The Brandon Sun still has one of the most engaged subscriber bases among Canadian newspapers, according to the results of Vividata’s Fall 2021 readership study.
According to the Toronto-based non-profit research company, the Sun ranks second overall in terms of its combined print and digital readership when compared to other Canadian newspapers and their products.
This marks a step up from last year’s study, where the Sun ranked third overall in Canada.
Vividata’s annual study collects data from 64 newspapers across the country and measures what percentage of a region engages with newspapers’ digital and print editions, breaking down the results into four categories.
When it comes to engagement during the week, approximately 50 per cent of adults in the Brandon area consume the Sun’s print and digital editions from Monday to Friday.
In terms of weekly print, weekly digital and weekly print/digital consumption, Brandon-area users are reading the Sun’s content at a rate of 58 per cent, 50 per cent and 77 per cent, respectively.
The only other newspaper in the country to score higher in this year’s ranking was the Belleville Intelligencer, which operates in a much more competitive marketplace in southern Ontario.
Other papers ranked this study include the Winnipeg Free Press (63rd place), the Edmonton Sun (12th place), the Globe and Mail (54th place), the Toronto Star (52nd place), the Ottawa Citizen (30th place) and the National Post (56th place).
A further breakdown of the Sun’s numbers released by Vividata reveals that 94 per cent of the publication’s weekday print readers consume this specific publication exclusively.
In terms of age demographics, 36 per cent of the Sun’s weekly print/digital readers are 50 years old or older, with the remainder of the pie being split between 18- to 34-year-olds (36 per cent) and 35- to 49-year-olds (28 per cent).
The gender breakdown is also pretty evenly split, with men and women consuming the paper at a rate of 48 per cent and 52 per cent, respectively.
