Maple Leaf Foods held a COVID-friendly holiday fireworks display at the Brandon plant on Saturday evening to say thank you to company employees and encourage a little Christmas spirit, handing out thousands of bags of popcorn and gummy candies in the process.

An estimated 3,000 people, including employees and their families, parked about 1,000 vehicles in the parking lot of the plant for the colourful 20-minute display.

Historically, the company has held a large holiday party for children of employees at the Keystone Centre around the holiday season, but last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed upon citizens and workplaces, this was not possible.

But instead of let another year pass without some form of celebration, the company came up with an innovative new idea that would provide a safe holiday space for everyone — a choreographed fireworks display that celebrates all the nations of people who work at the plant.

“It was just really important for us to have an event that was safe for our employees and their families,” said Maple Leaf senior human resources manager Nikolene Day. “It may be one of those things that we started to do differently because of COVID, but it might even be a better way to do it.”

CanFire Pyrotechnics choreographed selected fireworks with colours to match the country flags of all the nationalities represented by company employees, including Canada, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Philippines and Ukraine. The display’s finale used the colours from the Maple Leaf Foods logo.

A local company, Jiffy Food & Video, prepared 1,500 bags of popcorn that were distributed to incoming cars by staff volunteers at the entrance to the plant, along with a similar number of gummy candy bags.

All staff and their families who participated were expected to wear masks while taking in the show, and required to have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
