Brandon Municipal Airport will be quieter than normal over the next 24 hours after WestJet cancelled flights heading to and from Brandon.

Flights from Calgary to Brandon scheduled to arrive at 12:22 p.m. on Jan. 6 and at 12:35 a.m. on Jan. 7 have been cancelled as well as flights to Calgary from Brandon scheduled to leave at 12:55 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 6:15 a.m. on Jan. 7.

The airline’s website lists that flights later this week are still scheduled to proceed.

Asked for the reason the flights were cancelled, a spokesperson for WestJet pointed the Sun to a website listing the number of flights cancelled on each day in January so far due to the impacts of COVID-19 and winter weather conditions on the airline’s operations.

As of noon on Thursday, 72 flights had been cancelled so far that day.

On Dec. 31, WestJet announced it was consolidating approximately 15 per cent of its flights through Jan. 31 due to COVID-19 related staffing shortages.
