After Brandon’s Community Sportsplex was finally able to reopen its pool last month after being closed for more than a year, Brandon City Council is ready to approve the next phase of work at the facility.

On the agenda for Monday’s regular meeting of council is a vote on whether to accept the low bid from Winnipeg-based Sky City Roofing Ltd. to replace the roof over both the hockey arena and the pool.

According to a document attached to the agenda, the $1,366,508.96 bid from Sky City Roofing was the lowest among seven bids submitted to the city.

The most expensive bid was a $1.9 million from MJ Roofing & Supply.

Despite that bid amount, the city’s parks and recreation department estimates the total cost of the project will be $1,571,660, more than the $1,460,000 currently listed for it in the city’s proposed capital budget for 2022.

The department also believes that not fixing the roof will lead to future problems.

“Damage to the facility may occur if replacement is not completed due to ongoing leaking and moisture issues,” the presentation document reads. “There is potential for lost revenues when leaking or damage occurs and programs are cancelled or areas of the facility are closed due to these hazards and their repairs.”

However, the same document also states that there will be a minimal impact on the facility’s schedule and operations while construction is underway and any disruption will be communicated to the public.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Brandon resident Debbie Parrott will give a presentation discussing the health and climate implications of allowing backyard firepits within the city and asking councillors to consider banning them.

That’s not going to be the only smoke-related presentation, either. Stephanie Toews and Les Hagen from Action on Smoking and Health will talk to council about the health risks posed by smoking tobacco and cannabis as well as vaping.

They will press council to create stronger smoke-free bylaws in the city.

Two representatives from the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, Matt Grills and Hope Switzer, will give a presentation on the Downtown Ambassador Project and request fresh funding from the city for the program in 2022.

Reports will be given from the poverty committee and Keystone Centre board of directors and an update will be provided on the city’s progress toward the goals laid out in its strategic plans.

All Brandon City Council meetings are livestreamed online at wcgtv.ca and on the city’s YouTube page.
