A Brandon judge is Manitoba’s newest associate chief judge of the provincial court.

Judge Donovan Dvorak was appointed to the role Wednesday, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced Friday.

“Judge Dvorak has extensive experience in the legal community and as a judge, and I am pleased to make this appointment,” Goertzen said in a press release.

“I am confident he will serve Manitobans well and I wish him the best as he takes on this new role in Manitoba’s judicial system.”

Dvorak was appointed as a judge in 2013 and previously served as a Crown attorney in Dauphin from 1996 until 2009. He was a supervising senior Crown attorney in Dauphin from 2009 to 2013, according to a press release.

He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1994 with a bachelor of law degree.

Associate chief judges are appointed to seven-year terms. Dvorak was recommended by the minister of justice in consultation with provincial court Chief Judge Margaret Wiebe.

Dvorak replaces associated chief judge Malcolm McDonald, who retired earlier this month, according to the province.

Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta, who also sits in Brandon, was an associate chief judge of the provincial court from Aug. 2, 2013, until Aug. 1, 2020.

An official swearing-in ceremony for Dvorak in his new role will be scheduled at a later date.
