Starting in September, Assiniboine Community College will open an additional rural rotating site for its practical nursing program in the Interlake community of Arborg.

The new site will be able to accommodate a maximum of 25 students, adding to the active practical nursing programs ACC has already set up in Brandon, Winnipeg, Dauphin and Portage la Prairie.

“The demand for nurses continues to be high,” ACC president Mark Frison said in a Monday news release from the college. “Offering rural rotating nursing sites, like this one, helps to address the need for skilled graduates in all regions of the province.”

The site in Arborg was made possible by an investment from the Manitoba government, which announced late last year that it is looking to increase capacity in nursing programs across the board.

Interlake-Eastern regional health authority interim CEO Marion Ellis said she is more than happy to strengthen her pre-existing partnership with ACC, especially given the benefits this kind of programming provides.

“Training nurses close to home allows them to learn in a familiar environment and have the opportunity to learn about and apply for jobs in their community upon graduation,” Ellis said.

Any Interlake residents interested in applying for the new program can visit assiniboine.net/programs/practical-nursing. Registration will be open until April 18.

The community of Arborg is located roughly 120 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
