Westmanites once again have their chance to weigh in on their favourite aspects of the region they call home.
Voting for the Brandon Sun’s 2022 Westman Reader’s Choice is now live, giving readers their chance to declare who is the city’s most wonderful Brandonite, their favourite winter activity in the region, the most favourable hair salon, the best place to hang out with friends, and dozens of other categories.
“When this comes out and [businesses] win … they put it out there. It’s a badge of honour for them,” said Brandon Sun editor Matt Goerzen.
“For businesses, this is another way to remind customers they are Brandon’s choice, and I think that it tells a lot about the contest itself, that people will read this and pay attention.”
The winners are all chosen by readers, marking the true feelings of the community.
Categories also include the most trustworthy politician, which Mayor Rick Chrest won gold in 2021, and best local charity, which went to Big Brothers Big Sisters last year.
The Shilo Country Club took home gold in the best Westman golf course, while the Wheat City Golf Course won gold for the best golf course in Brandon.
Benny’s restaurant also proved popular in 2021, securing gold for best restaurant for diner and silver for best restaurant for steak and fine dining.
The contest has run since 2017 and has increased in popularity each year.
In its first year, the contest had 8,788 votes cast, but that grew to more than 165,000 in 2021.
“I think people like to talk about what their favourite restaurant is,” Goerzen said.
“There’s a kind of comparison that we as community-minded people naturally do. ‘Oh, I had great service there.’ You want to tell people about that because you want to support them. This is one other way that people in Brandon can support people in their own community.”
By voting in at least 25 categories, you will be entered to win a $500 cash prize.
The top three winners in each category will be designated gold, silver or bronze winners and receive a certificate to display in storefronts.
Voting closes Feb. 28 at midnight. The winners will be announced in a future edition of the newspaper.
