Eager fifth and sixth graders at Waverly Park School were recognized Tuesday afternoon for their efforts in keeping their fellow classmates safe.

The 36 students received goodie bags from CAA Manitoba to thank them for patrolling the crosswalks outside the west-end school.

The students don yellow vests and bright, orange flags when people use the crosswalks, giving a visual reminder for drivers to stop. The students’ gear is hung up just inside the doors of the school.

Patrollers help people at the crosswalks during peak hours throughout the day: during morning drop-off, lunch and at the end of the school day.

“It instills at an early age everything from getting up early, on time and organizing themselves and getting out there and looking out for the kids in their school,” said Brandon police school resource officer Const. Jason Medwechuk.

“Without those patrollers out there, you don’t have that extra layer of safety at the crosswalks every morning. It’s really important to have them out there, and I also think it’s a big character builder for the students to be a part of the program.”

Approximately 400 students across the Brandon School Division take part in the program, Medwechuk said. All the participants are volunteers.

Normally there are more events to thank students, but the pandemic put a damper on what could be done. This year marks the first year of giving out the swag bags to students. Waverly Park was the last school within Brandon city limits to get gift bags.

“I could see how passionate the kids were when they did their initial training and how much they wanted to contribute, and I really felt it was a nice way to recognize them as well,” he said.
