Applications open for Alzheimer Society board

Two new board members are being sought for the Alzheimer Society of Canada according to a public service announcement being circulated by the organization.

“The successful candidate will help guide the organization’s work to support families living with dementia throughout the province,” the announcement reads.

Interested applications are encouraged to send a cover letter and resume to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Inc., 10 – 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4G2 by mail or alzmb@alzheimer.mb.ca by email.

Candidates can be elected for a maximum of two consecutive three-year terms.

Flooding possible along Assiniboine

Manitoba’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre has released its second 2022 spring flood outlook.

According to the forecast, there is a risk of moderate flooding on the Assiniboine and Souris rivers while the risk of flooding in the Interlake region and northern Manitoba is considered to be low, with an exception of the Whiteshell Lakes area.

The March outlook continues from the February research and is anticipating minor overbank flooding expected on the Assiniboine River, due to below-normal snow-water levels in the snowpack. Soil moisture in the river’s watershed is considered to be at a normal to below normal level as well.

The centre said the Portage Diversion may be operated to prevent ice jamming on the Assiniboine River east of Portage la Prairie to control river levels in the city of Winnipeg and areas along the Assiniboine River downstream of Portage la Prairie.

There is also a risk for major flooding along the Red River and its tributaries with high flood preparation activities underway.

While significant high-water activity is expected in southern Manitoba, flood water levels are expected to remain below community flood protection levels. The levels are largely influenced by the rate of snowmelt and future snow and rain accumulation.

Following the provincial outlook from February, with normal weather, water levels similar to 2020 are expected on the Red River. Making use of the Red River Floodway and the Portage Diversion, water levels at James Avenue in Winnipeg could reach 19.5 feet with unfavourable weather conditions.

More updated flood information will be shared from the province next week.
