Workers at 18 Safeway stores across Manitoba, including in Brandon, voted to approve a new five-year collective agreement this week.
The announcement came on Friday from UFCW Local 832, which represents more than 1,700 workers at those stores.
According to a release sent out by the union, the new agreement includes wage increases, funding for a benefits plan, a new way for cashiers to address scheduling concerns and the right for workers to refuse using customers’ unsanitary reusable shopping bags without facing discipline.

“Our bargaining team worked extremely hard to represent the concerns of the 1,700 Safeway workers across Manitoba,” union president Jeff Traeger said in a release.
“While we still strongly believe that they deserve more after working on the front line for the past two years, this new agreement includes wage and benefit improvements that are above-and-beyond comparison to other unionized retail grocery workers.”
The release also states that FreshCo workers at the six Manitoba locations were moved to their own bargaining unit during negotiations.
