The City of Brandon is preparing to move forward on the first steps toward creating a new multi-sport court on Maryland Avenue.

Funding for a multi-sport court next to the Riverview Curling Club and near Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School — not to be mistaken with the new outdoor sports complex that will be built at the corner of Veterans Way and First Street North — was approved during budget deliberations earlier this year.

Jumpstart, a charity run by Canadian Tire focusing on youth sports and fitness, is partnering with the city for the construction of the court itself and some surrounding structures.

According to a tender posted to the city’s website on April 1, Brandon is looking for a contractor to prepare the chosen site for construction, rehabilitate the curling club’s parking lot and create a multi-use path around the area.

A diagram shows the path will start on Maryland Avenue, west of the Riverview Curling Club, and goes south, curving to go along the eastern edge of Drake Way, then finally proceeding east along the south end of the lot that Crocus Plains sits on and meeting up with First Street.

Much of the work will be focused on excavating the soil to create a proper surface to build on as well as removing and replacing asphalt.

Tender documents show Winnipeg-based engineering firms Burns Maendel and Eng-Tech Consulting Limited dug seven test holes around the planned location for the court in December 2021.

Most of the holes showed approximately 150 millimetres of topsoil on top of sand containing low to moderate amounts of clay, though one test hole revealed alternating layers of clay and sand.

The plan for the court looks similar to Jumpstart courts built or planned in other cities in Canada like Saskatoon, Prince George, B.C., and Thompson.

Another diagram, this time of the court itself, shows a FIBA — the international regulating body for basketball — approved playing surface as well as what looks like a three-on-three basketball playing surface and a shade structure standing between them.

In other cities, the courts are capable of being used for other sports as well like tennis, ball hockey and pickleball.

The diagram also lists locations for potential washrooms, new trees, light standards, a bike rack and a detention pond.

Applications for the tender close on April 14 at 2 p.m. Whichever contractor submits the winning bid will be expected to complete work by Aug. 31.
