Two students from Assiniboine Community College will represent Brandon at this year’s Skills Canada competition, having qualified for the national contest earlier this month.

Hailey Burghart and Jackson Salyn walked away from the 24th Skills Manitoba competition, which took place throughout April 18-22, with a gold medal in electrical installations and IT network systems administration, respectively.

“Moving onto Skills Canada honestly just proves to me that I am able to use what I’ve learned so far, and makes me hopeful for the future,” Salyn said in a Friday news release from ACC.

Assiniboine Community College student Jackson Salyn won a gold medal in the IT network systems administration category of this year’s Skills Manitoba competition. Because of this, he will represent Brandon at the upcoming Skills Canada competition that is taking place in late May. (Submitted)

“I think the national competition will be great for my future career and will be a once in a life time experience,” Burghart said in the same release.

Outside of Burghart and Salyn, ACC picked up six medals overall at this year’s Skills Manitoba competition thanks to the following students: Matthew Penner (silver, electrical installations), Kieron Friesen (silver, automobile technology), Charles Tupas (bronze, 3D digital game art) and Stephen Gartside (bronze, 3D digital game art).

The upcoming Skills Canada competition is taking place in Vancouver, B.C. throughout May 26-27 and will feature over 300 students from across the country.

This year’s event marks the first time Skills Canada has been able to host their national competition in person since 2019.
