Registrations are now open for residents looking to run for mayor of Brandon.
Starting May 2 and ending Sept. 20, residents who are at least 18 years of age on election day who are Canadian citizens and have been a resident of Brandon as of April 26, 2022 can register to run for mayor.
The registration period for candidates for councillors starts June 30. Nomination papers for registered candidates are due between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20.
Residents who work for the City of Brandon, are running for office in another municipality, are running for school trustee, are a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, the Canadian Senate or House of Commons, are a provincial judge or justice of the peace or who have been disqualified from candidacy due to filing 2018 election finance statements late or who have been convicted of an election offence are ineligible to run for any council position.
The City of Brandon has set campaign expense limits as $19,100 for mayoral candidates and $4,800 for councillor candidates this year.
So far, Coun. Jeff Fawcett (Assiniboine) is the only publicly declared candidate in the race to replace retiring Mayor Rick Chrest.
Election day is Oct. 26.
