Cause of fire ruled ‘accidental’

Paramedics met a WestJet flight from Calgary to Brandon on the runway to respond to a medical emergency on May 15, according to a report on Transport Canada’s website.

That report states that shortly after 11 a.m. that day, WestJet flight 3242 approximately 80 nautical miles away from Brandon reported a medical emergency and was advised to continue to its destination where paramedics would be waiting.

The flight landed about 20 minutes later with no reported impact on operations at the airport.

A media relations advisor for WestJet confirmed the incident occurred and that the flight landed safely but wrote in an email that no more details could be provided due to safety concerns.

BSD approves out-of-province travel

Out-of-province field trips are now back on the table for local educators, with the Brandon School Division board of trustees having unanimously approved a policy shift during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Now, BSD school trips outside of Manitoba and within the country must be approved by Supt. Mathew Gustafson, while international excursions must be greenlit by the board as a whole.

The motion follows a recent provincewide loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, which prevented BSD officials from sanctioning field trips throughout much of the pandemic.

“We did have some off-site [trips] that occurred this year for sports teams playing games, when they would go to other gyms. So tonight was about the out-of-province field trips,” Gustafson told the Sun following Tuesday’s meeting.

Gustafson said he isn’t sure if any new field trips will be approved immediately, since there are only a handful of weeks left in the regular 2021-22 academic year.

Instead, he is anticipating that out-of-province field trips will return in full this fall, although the board isn’t counting out the possibility that the policy could be reversed if provincial health restrictions tighten up again.

“It’s great for students to have those opportunities again, always with an eye to caution if health conditions should change,” BSD board chairperson Linda Ross said.
