A young man is being remembered as a car enthusiast and caring person after he died in a collision along Grand Valley Road Sunday evening.
Friends of Jonathan Hofer, 18, confirmed he died in a vehicle accident west of Brandon over the Victoria Day long weekend.
“We have lost a very, very kind soul, a very generous soul,” wrote friend Andy Chambers in a Facebook message to the Sun.
“Jonathan didn’t care about money, if someone needed help in any way he was right there offering anything he could. All he wanted was to see other people happy, to see other people succeed,” the message reads.
Chambers said Hofer’s friends were not ready to speak about his death when contacted on Wednesday.
Police responded to the collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Blue Hills RCMP. The collision was on Grand Valley Road, near the intersection of Road 115 North, approximately eight kilometres west of Brandon.
The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old Brandon woman, was “extricated” from the vehicle and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said in a press release.
“The initial investigation has determined that the 18-year-old male was standing on the side of the road when the vehicle entered the curve in the road and lost control and struck the male. The vehicle then entered the ditch and rolled,” the press release reads.
When the Sun visited the scene Wednesday morning, there were two crosses erected on the south side of the road, one blue and one white. The white cross had the initials J.H. written on it.
There were also flowers and blue toy cars at the base of the crosses.
Tire skid marks could also be seen on the pavement near the memorial.
Hofer was a member of the Westman Whips car club, Chambers said. He had an Instagram account dedicated to his blue Ford Mustang.
Police are still investigating the collision, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Julie Courchaine, and charges for the driver are possible. The investigation is still in the early stages, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors.
A forensic collision reconstructionist is also involved in the investigation.
Rural Municipality of Whitehead Reeve Allan Sutherland said the community does not have any safety concerns with the stretch of Grand Valley Road where the collision happened.
